5 Tips for Healthy Hair

I am the first to admit I am far from a hair expert! This blog comes from my personal finds and experiences, in hopes that this can encourage and give some insight of what has helped me with my hair journey this past year.

Last summer after I had covid, I had suffered extreme hair loss for a little over a month. I was washing my hair one afternoon and clumps of hair were coming out as I was running my hands through my hair. Of course, I immediately start Googling and seeing the worst-case scenarios. I made an appointment with my doctor, and she pinned it from my extremely high fever (105) I had when I had covid. She told me that it was normal to see your hair shed like that after experiencing high fevers because your body is trying to get rid/shed whatever is causing the fever. Since then, I have been a hair tip researching fool!

The first photo below was my hair before my hair started shedding (April ‘20), the middle was in December ‘21 after I lost 36 pounds of hair and the third is where my hair is at now (Sept ‘22)!

I think healthy hair takes time and a facet of tricks, so I am going to share everything that I have been implementing into my hair care routine to get my healthy hair back.

Vitamins/Supplements - I have been taking Nutrafol for a year now and I swear up and down from it. “Our daily hair growth supplement is made for women experiencing compromised hair health. Physician-formulated with medical-grade, natural ingredients to target root causes of thinning such as stress, lifestyle and nutrition, our award-winning formula results in faster-growing, thicker, fuller, stronger hair.” Now, I don’t think that there is a magic pill that will be a quick fix. But I do believe that taking these consistently at night has significantly helped increase strengthen my hair and helped it grow just a little faster. After I had been taking them for 4 months, my hairdresser asked me what I was doing differently because my hair had grown so much #winning They also have vitamins specifically for women postpartum! I did try Vegamour for a month but didn’t follow through with their gummies or hair drops. I have a couple of friends that swear by it; I’m less steps is more and just taking pills from Nutrafol was more my jam.

Eliminate washes -

This might be the most controversial topic in our household LOL Trav always gave me so much shit for how little I wash my hair, but I gotta protect the natural hair oils damnit. I typically only wash my hair about 2 times a week. Over washing your hair can actually cause more damage and dry it out even more. Thank baby Jesus for bringing back the slicked back bun era. This helps me get by a lot easier with some dry shampoo here and there.

P.S. I have been using Olaplex’s system for a year now and am OBSESSED. My hair stays nice and moisturized. If you use a purple shampoo, DO NOT SLEEP on their purple shampoo. I’ve tried 10+ purple shampoos and theirs takes the cake by far.

Hair masks -

My hairdresser recommend that I do these about every other week. I wish I could say that I was that consistent but that would be a big ‘ol lie. Realistically I do a hair mask about once a month. Finding a good hair mask can help bring back the instant shine, moisture and protect your hair. I personally use all Olaplex products, so I stick with their hair mask.

Air dry -

I think we all already know this, but if you don’t, try to let your hair air dry as long as possible. If I do not blow dry my hair, it is extremely wavy. I let my hair air dry till it’s about 80% dry, then run some cool air from my blow dryer to finish it. As far as what blow dryer, I just use one I grabbed from Target. Obviously, the Dyson hair tool is obviously all over the internet, I just haven’t bit the bullet for that price tag though. I have seen/heard great things about it!

“What hair extensions did you wear when you were in Nashville?

I LOVE some good extensions! I went back and forth for two months debating if I wanted to get the permanent kind, but I ended up deciding against them. I ended up purchasing clip-in extensions from bfbhair. I liked the idea of getting to pick and choose when I wanted long hair, not damaging my hair even more when I am focusing on growing it out and keeping my hair maintenance down. I have had my bfb extensions for a year now and highly recommend them. There are so many ways to style them and are so easy to use. I love that I can wear them down, half up and I wore them in a pony and braid ALL the time this summer. I have a whole blog post going into more details here. Since I went a little darker this fall, I ended up grabbing a new set and they are sending me their newest product, a halo! I have been getting a lot of questions on my hair and how I style them, so be on the lookout for content I’ll share showing all my secrets :)
