5 STEPS TO PLAN YOUR WARDROBE INTENTIONALLY

Last week I was asked, “how do you shop more intentionally?”

I loved this question because this is something that I have really dived into the past year, and I think simplifying and being more intentional with how I spend money on clothes has really become a key aspect. I am the first to admit I am a quick thinker, and it is something I have really had to work on. In the past I would pull the trigger immediately rather than having an outfit inspo or really taking the time to decide if I truly needed the items. I love fashion for it can be fun, a creative outlet and is another piece for helping us feel more confident. I used to buy clothes just for heck of it and for that, I ended up with a lot of clothes I never wore. Now that I have done a couple closet clean out’s, I can say that it makes getting ready way easier + it truly reflects my style more.

So, how do we go about being more intentional when it comes to shopping?

Having a capsule wardrobe is key.

This term is becoming used more and if you’re not familiar with it, it’s basically a set of “basics” that you can mix or match to create various outfits. What do basic pieces look like? Your top 2-3 pairs of blue jeans, your monochromatic tanks/ tees and timeless shoes like white tennies or classic black boots. You can read more about a blog I did on wardrobe capsules here.

As I mentioned before it makes getting ready a lot easier and it’s a lot cheaper. Having items that you are more attached to means that you will wear them more AND you have the main pieces that you can build your building pieces around (i.e., a colored blazer or accessories).

  1. Find your personal style.

If you don’t know what your styles are your wardrobe will not have much direction, random and unorganized. If you don’t know what your style is, take the time to see what it is! When figuring it out, make sure to not put yourself in just one category. One of my girlfriends, Sam, told me that our style is like our personality, it has multiple sides. I suggest taking the time to figure out what you most relate to. Are you casual, simple and comfortable? Maybe you are trendy and tonal with some bold accessories? I found this quick and simple quiz for you to take if you need some help!

  2. Know your body measurements.

Knowing your measurements will help you know what kind of body shape you have. For example, if you have an apple body shape finding tops that draw attention to your shoulders, bust or neckline is going to be most flattering. Maybe you have a pear body shape - finding dresses that are more form fitting to your hips and a wider shape at the bottom is going to help extenuate your waist more! Here is another tool you can throw in your toolbox to figure out what type of body shape you have! Take the quiz here.

  3. Have a purpose when you go shopping.

If I have an event I am shopping for, I’ll have an outfit or two on Pinterest saved for inspiration! This makes shopping way less overwhelming and helps me stay focused. When you are looking for outfit inspo’s, make sure you are being practical. Are they pieces you will wear again? Does it reflect your style and most importantly, will you be comfortable?

  4. Closet clean out!

I go through my closet about every 3 months. Trends come and go; clothes won’t fit the same or maybe you still haven’t worn the sweater that you said you were going to wear your last clean out LOL Having pieces that you actually wear in your closet make it sooo much easier to style!

As a reminder, these are just my personal suggestions that I have found to help me out! Fashion should be fun and expressive, not stress you out! I truly hope you take the time to try out one or two of these suggestions to help you be one step closer to feeling confident when you’re shopping. Be sure to tag me on IG if you found that one of these helped you out - I love seeing when you learned something from around here!

Cheers sis.
